Mastercard adds 22 startups to its AI commerce program

Mastercard’s September 2026 Start Path update names 22 companies in its inaugural Agentic Commerce & Services program. The cohort covers work such as payment credentials, transaction verification and connections between merchants and AI services. For retailers, those capabilities meet at a practical task: accepting an order that can be traced back to the buyer’s decision.

Mastercard’s Agent Pay description emphasizes registered agents and purchases backed by authenticated intent and explicit consent. Those are useful questions to bring to a payment-provider discussion. A retailer needs to understand what evidence reaches its own systems and which team can retrieve it when a customer asks about an order.

Consider an illustrative purchase of a coffee machine. The buyer approves a particular model and a final total. In a provider demonstration, ask to follow that approval into the payment record, the retailer’s order and the customer’s confirmation. Check that all four refer to the same item and amount.

Then introduce a realistic change: the selected model becomes unavailable, or a different delivery option changes the total. Ask the provider to show how the customer is informed and what approval is required before the purchase proceeds. Keep the expected behavior in the pilot brief so the team can distinguish a supported flow from a feature still being developed.

Customer service needs a usable record too. Give the support team the confirmation available to the buyer and ask it to locate the order, identify the product and explain the next step for a return or refund. Establish which provider handles each part of that request. The applicable payment and merchant terms should govern the actual process.

Use the cohort announcement as a starting point for investigating a specific capability. Participation in a startup program alone does not establish that a service supports your market, payment provider or order system. Ask for evidence of the exact connection the business needs, together with a contact responsible for resolving failed transactions.

The useful outcome of a pilot is a purchase the buyer can recognize and the retailer can fulfill and support. The AI shopping primer places those checks within the wider discovery-to-purchase journey.

Common questions

What did Mastercard announce?

Its September Start Path update lists 22 participants in a new program covering AI commerce and services.

Does joining the cohort make a service ready for every retailer?

A retailer still needs to verify availability and support for its payment provider, market and order system with the service itself.

What should a merchant verify in an AI-assisted purchase?

Check that buyer approval, payment, order and confirmation agree on the item and amount. Include a change to the offer and a support lookup in the demonstration.
