Shopify moves the facts AI agents read into your admin, as Visa names trust the barrier to scale

Shopify's knowledge base for AI agents now lives in the store admin and holds up to 1,000 facts. A day later, Visa called trust the biggest barrier to agentic commerce at scale.

Two announcements a day apart put the same question to ecommerce teams: what does an AI assistant see when it reads your store? On October 26, 2026, Shopify moved the knowledge base that feeds its AI channels into the store admin. On October 27, Visa told analysts that trust is the biggest barrier to AI agents buying at scale.

The knowledge base now sits in the admin under Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base, Relevant Audience reported from Shopify's changelog. Shopify drafts facts for you from your own storefront in nine categories, from store policies and payment to returns, fulfillment and gift services, and a tenth category holds the additional facts you write yourself. Shopify's help page sets the limit: a knowledge base holds 1,000 facts in total, drafted and added together.

Facts linked to your admin, such as store policies and contact details, publish as soon as Shopify creates them. Facts that Shopify drafts from a scan of your storefront wait for your approval. Published facts reach Shop and third-party AI platforms through the Storefront MCP, the connection Shopify uses to hand store facts to AI channels.

The standalone Shopify Knowledge Base app is no longer available to install, and Shopify deprecates it on January 15, 2027. Stores with more than 1,000 facts in the app need to add their additional facts and store fact overrides to the new knowledge base by hand before then.

Open the page and read it the way an AI assistant would. Approve the drafted facts that answer what a shopper asks before buying: how long returns stay open, how fast orders ship, where they ship from, and what happens when an order arrives wrong. Correct any draft that gets a detail wrong before you publish it.

Visa's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call on October 27 covered the payment side of the same shift. "It is clear that in agentic, trust is the biggest barrier to scale," CEO Ryan McInerney said, PYMNTS reported. He described the work ahead as identifying an agent, connecting it to a customer and confirming that its spending follows the customer's instructions. Visa has nearly 50 AI partners in production and expects that number to double in the coming months.

The two announcements divide the work. Visa is building the checks that prove which agent is acting and on whose authority. The merchant controls the other half: the facts an agent reads before it recommends a product or buys one. On Shopify, those facts now sit on one page in the admin, ready to review.
