Shopify and Google expand AI checkout as Etsy reports a personalization gain

Shop Pay reaches more AI assistants and Google expands direct checkout. Etsy's sales results show why matching shoppers with suitable products matters too.

Shopify brought Shop Pay into more personal AI agents on October 28, 2026. Google reported direct checkout across hundreds of thousands of brands the same day. Together, the announcements give merchants more places where an AI recommendation can lead to a purchase.

Etsy's latest results address an earlier step in that journey: helping a shopper find something worth buying. Its estimate of the contribution from personalization offers evidence that better product matching can matter even before checkout changes.

Shop Pay moves into the conversation

Shopify's Fall '26 announcement names Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct as the first personal AI agents in the release. Shopify says buyers retain control of purchases and their card details stay outside the agent.

The Fall '26 Editions page also describes ways for agents to ask stores questions using facts the business has published and to create checkout links. A merchant's published information can therefore shape both the recommendation and the offer a shopper is ready to accept.

On Alphabet's October 28 earnings call, chief business officer Philipp Schindler said Universal Commerce Protocol enabled direct checkout for hundreds of thousands of brands across Google, including Chewy and Nike.

That reach makes consistency more important. A price quoted in a conversation needs to survive the move to checkout. Delivery promises and stock status need to agree too. Each discrepancy gives a customer a reason to reconsider an otherwise suitable product.

Etsy puts a number on better product matching

Etsy's October 28 shareholder letter reports $2.65 billion in third-quarter marketplace gross merchandise sales, up 8.8% from $2.43 billion a year earlier.

Etsy estimates that personalization improvements contributed about two percentage points to its annualized year-over-year sales growth rate by the third quarter. That estimate covers broader product matching, including recommendations; it does not measure the effect of its Gifting Assistant beta or wedding-shopping tests.

The chart shows total quarterly sales, so the entire increase cannot be attributed to personalization.

The product answer and the order must agree

These developments create two jobs for a merchant. Product information must explain why an item fits a particular shopper, and the purchase path must honor the terms used to recommend it.

For a gift seller, a delivery cutoff can be as decisive as the product itself. For apparel, the availability of the recommended size matters. A useful review follows one real buying question through to the order details and looks for a change in the promise along the way.

An assistant that finds a suitable item has done only part of the work. The merchant still has to make that exact offer available to buy.

Common questions

Does an AI agent receive the buyer's card details?

Shopify says card details stay outside the agent and the buyer retains control of purchases through Shop Pay.

Did AI shopping assistants cause Etsy's sales growth?

Etsy's estimate concerns broader personalization improvements. It does not isolate sales attributable to its shopping-assistant tests.

Does Google's announcement mean every product supports direct checkout?

It describes overall brand reach. Availability still needs to be checked for the merchant's products and the Google experience a shopper uses.
