Shopify and Vercel ship AI storefronts while shoppers hold back on agent checkout

Shopify and Vercel presented an open-source storefront built for AI agents on October 15, 2026. Five days later, a survey found only 5% of U.S. consumers would trust an AI platform to process an agent's payment.

On October 15, 2026, at Vercel's Ship 26 conference in San Francisco, Shopify and Vercel presented Vercel Shop, an open-source storefront template with agent-readable product information and shopping tools. An outside AI agent can search the catalog and build a cart, then hand the shopper a checkout link on the merchant's own domain. The template also includes an optional assistant that helps human visitors find products and manage a cart, though it cannot place orders or take payment.

The day before, Shopify released Hydrogen 2026-10, a library that adds Shopify commerce to a store built on any JavaScript framework. It handles the cart, variant selection and prices in the buyer's currency, and it ships with 20 skills that teach coding agents to build storefront pages. For a marketing leader, the point is that a store can publish product data AI agents can read without a custom build.

Shoppers are moving more slowly on payment. On October 20, Wildfire Systems published a survey of 1,007 U.S. consumers in which 71% said they now use AI chatbots, up from 22% two years earlier. Among AI users, 56% use AI to compare prices and 44% to hunt for deals. When asked who they would trust to process an AI agent's payment, only 5% chose the AI platform itself.

Wildfire also cites Mastercard's Signals research, which found 85% of consumers open to working with an AI agent to find the best option and one in 10 willing to let an agent complete a purchase on its own. OpenAI changed course in March, shifting its shopping strategy toward product discovery and merchants' own checkout experiences after saying its initial Instant Checkout model did not give merchants the flexibility it wanted.

With checkout staying in human hands for now, the agent's job is the comparison, and a storefront like Vercel Shop gives it clean product data to compare. Check whether the AI assistants your customers use can read your product attributes and name your brand when a shopper asks them to compare prices.
