Shopify adds browser-agent checkout with buyer confirmation

Shopify added WebMCP support for checkout on September 28, 2026, giving browser-based AI agents tools to read and update the checkout a buyer has open. An agent can submit the order after buyer confirmation. Steps that need a person’s input return control to the buyer.

Shopify’s announcement names payment authentication and blocking checkout extensions as examples of those handoffs. It says the tools require no merchant configuration. The change concerns agents operating through the buyer’s browser; it should not be read as a promise that every assistant already supports the experience.

For a merchant, the immediate task is to verify a complete journey through the store’s own checkout. A product recommendation can be accurate while the resulting order contains the wrong size, shipping option or quantity. Check the final order against what the buyer actually chose.

Start with a test purchase: one shirt, a specified color and size, and delivery to a known destination. Ask the assistant to carry those choices through checkout. Before confirmation, the buyer should be able to recognize the selected variant, quantity, delivery address and final total.

Then make a supported change, such as correcting the delivery address. Check the shipping options and total again before approval. The purpose is to establish that the purchase review reflects the current order after a change.

Include a step that returns control to the buyer. Where a payment challenge appears, the person should understand what they need to complete and when they can continue. Use the store’s approved test process to verify the handoff without placing unintended customer orders.

After completion, inspect the order confirmation and the merchant’s record. Both should describe the same item and amount, and the customer should have an order reference for support. If the buyer stops before approval, verify that the result is equally clear.

This is also an opportunity to review custom checkout steps. A delivery instruction, required acknowledgment or other store-specific requirement should remain understandable when an assistant helps with the flow. Document any step the chosen agent cannot complete so the team can set accurate expectations.

The AI shopping pilot guide can help bound that review to a small product set and a supported assistant before a broader rollout.
