The sources cited in an AI shopping answer show where to investigate its product claims and recommendations. Review the answer and the linked pages together to see whether a buyer has the evidence needed to choose.
Keep the buyer’s question with the answer
Save the exact question, assistant, date, relevant location and complete response. Include the cited links and the product variant being discussed. That context helps distinguish an inaccurate answer from a recommendation for a different market or item.
A brand can appear in the answer without its own website being cited. Conversely, a cited brand page may support a factual detail without the answer recommending that brand.
Identify the role of each source
Source type | What it may help a buyer verify | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
Brand product page | Specifications, variants and current product information | The exact item and the evidence for suitability |
Retailer or marketplace listing | Local availability, pack size, price and delivery | The selected seller, variant and market |
Independent review or comparison | Experience, tradeoffs and alternatives | Testing conditions, commercial disclosures and the products compared |
Community discussion | Questions and experiences from other users | Whether the experience applies to the buyer’s needs |
Policy or support page | Returns, warranty, care and compatibility | The applicable product, region and effective terms |
These categories help organize a review. They do not establish that every page in a category is reliable or that one source type is preferred by every assistant.
Open the page and check the specific claim
Find the information the answer relies on. Confirm that it refers to the right product and remains current. Check whether the source supports the wording the assistant used.
For an illustrative request for a fragrance-free face wash, a link to a brand’s general skin-care category is not enough to establish that a particular item is fragrance-free. The exact product’s published information is the relevant evidence.
Retain the page and passage when an answer overstates the source. That record makes a later correction or follow-up review more useful.
Look for patterns across relevant questions
Review several comparable buyer questions and observations. Note which pages recur, what they explain well and where important questions remain unanswered. Keep assistant experiences and markets distinguishable so a local retailer result does not become a claim about every buyer.
A recurring independent comparison might show that shoppers need help with compatibility or long-term maintenance. Use that need to guide useful content; copying the page’s wording would add little value.
Make a short source review
For each issue, record the buyer question, answer passage, source URL, verified problem, person responsible for the next action and follow-up date. A concise record is easier to act on than a list of domains without context.
If the source is accurate and relevant, it may require no correction. If your own page is missing a material fact, add it. If an independent page contains a factual error, use the publisher’s correction process and provide supporting evidence.
The citation action guide explains how to prioritize those improvements. The product-page guide provides concrete checks for information you control.
