How to write ChatGPT ads for a specific buying need

A useful ChatGPT ad should help someone decide whether a product meets a specific need. Start with the customer's constraint, put the relevant fact in the headline, and send the click to a page that proves it.

OpenAI's creative guidance favors specific benefits, distinct creative variations and relevant destinations. Its advertiser documentation describes ads below ChatGPT responses and allows context hints about relevant topics. Those hints do not guarantee placement in a particular conversation.

Start with a constraint you can answer

Consider an illustrative furniture campaign for someone who needs a bookcase narrower than 80 cm. Assume the retailer has verified that one model is 78 cm wide when assembled, with adjustable shelves. The ad can answer that width constraint directly.

Headline: 78 cm-wide bookcase for narrow spaces.

Description: Adjustable shelves for books and storage. See full dimensions, finishes and delivery options.

The width matters because it helps the customer rule the product in or out. A headline such as 'Transform your home with beautiful storage' leaves that decision unresolved. Before using the example, replace every detail with verified facts about the exact product being advertised.

Make the landing page prove the claim

Send this ad to the specified bookcase. The customer should see the same model and finish pictured in the creative, with dimensions labeled as assembled dimensions. A packaging measurement would answer a different question.

Customer question

Evidence to show on the page

Will it fit the available space?

Assembled width, height and depth, with units and a clear dimension diagram.

Will my books fit on the shelves?

Usable shelf dimensions and the product's verified shelf load limits.

What will I receive?

The selected finish, included parts, assembly information and any required wall anchoring.

Can I get it when I need it?

Availability, delivery options and costs for the customer's location.

Ask a colleague to open the ad's destination on a phone and choose the pictured finish. If the page switches to a different size, hides the dimensions in an unrelated download or sends them to a broad furniture category, fix that path before spending on the ad.

Give each creative a different reason to matter

Build another variation only when there is another supported buying need. A verified shelf-height range could support a message about fitting tall books. A documented finish could support a message about matching existing furniture. Replacing 'beautiful' with 'stylish' does not test a different product benefit.

For each variation, keep a short record of the intended customer need, the exact claim and the page section that supports it. That record gives the merchandiser and campaign owner a shared review brief. It also makes a product change, such as a revised size or finish, easier to carry through to the ads.

Keep paid placement separate from recommendations

OpenAI states that ads are labeled and separate from its answers. An ad impression is evidence of paid delivery. It does not show that the assistant independently recommended the product.

Review what happens after the click: whether the visitor reaches the advertised item, can select it and can complete the intended next step. If people arrive but cannot find the size they came for, changing the headline again will leave the underlying problem in place.
