Shopify hands the catalog to AI agents while shoppers still verify before buying

Since October 13, 2026, any AI agent can search Shopify's catalog and check out with Shop Pay. A survey the next day found nine in ten AI shoppers check a recommendation elsewhere before buying.

On October 13, 2026, Shopify opened its catalog to any AI agent. Through its Shop MCP connection, an agent or app can search more than a billion products in Shopify Catalog and take the shopper through a Shop Pay checkout. The shopper confirms the total and payment method before the order goes through, unless they have turned on a setting that lets the agent pay within a budget they set. Orders placed this way appear in the merchant's Shopify admin.

A day later, on October 14, Product.ai published a survey of 1,493 U.S. adults that shows how shoppers treat those recommendations. Among the 550 who use AI for product research, 89.9% had checked an assistant's recommendation through another source before buying, up from 85.7% in June. Only 21.6% had let an assistant complete a purchase from start to finish.

Agents can now get from search to checkout on Shopify, while most of the shoppers who use them still look for a second opinion before paying. The survey also shows which assistants those shoppers use to research a purchase, and two of them sit far ahead of the rest.

The same two lead on trust. Asked which assistants they trust most for shopping, 43.5% named Gemini and 42.2% named ChatGPT. A wrong answer has a cost: six in ten AI shoppers who had caught an assistant's mistake changed their plans, by skipping the purchase, buying a different product or giving up on AI for that kind of shopping.

Merchants decide how much of this reaches their store. In the Agentic section of Shopify admin, turning off the default "Allow Shopify to manage for me" setting lets a merchant set catalog access and direct checkout channel by channel. Turning off catalog access stops third-party agents from reaching products through Shopify Catalog, although products can still appear through ordinary web crawling.

The second look is where your product facts get tested. Ask Gemini and ChatGPT about a product you sell the way a shopper would, then compare the answer with your product page and your listings elsewhere. Wherever a price or a specification differs, correct the source the assistant is reading.
