The listings AI agents read now decide which business gets found and paid
Shop moved to shop.com, shop.md let ChatGPT and Claude shop Shopify Catalog, and Stripe made businesses payable by handle. In each, a shopper or an AI agent reads a listing on Shopify or Stripe before any money moves.
Three launches between September 29 and October 28, 2026 changed where shoppers and businesses find each other. Shopify turned Shop into a place to browse at shop.com and let ChatGPT and Claude shop its catalog through shop.md. Stripe made any business with a public Stripe profile payable by its handle. In all three, a listing on Shopify or Stripe decides who gets found before any money moves.
Shop is now a place to browse
On September 29, Shopify moved Shop's website from shop.app to shop.com. Old shop.app links redirect on their own, and store settings carry over as they are. Shopify's Fall '26 Edition on October 28 filled the site out: personalized interest feeds, curated content, order tracking and search filters for size, price, color and brand. Shop ranks each signed-in shopper's results by that shopper's browsing and purchase history. Each store's branding and merchandising sync to its landing page in Shop automatically. Universal checkout lets a shopper fill one cart from several brands and pay in one tap.
shop.md lets ChatGPT and Claude shop Shopify's catalog
shop.md is a skill a shopper adds to ChatGPT or Claude. Once the shopper signs in, the AI agent searches more than a billion products in Shopify Catalog. It recommends products from what the shopper likes and recently bought, then checks out with Shop Pay inside the chat. The shopper approves each purchase and can set budget caps or shopping rules. Shopifreaks, which reported the launch on October 13, gives "fast shipping only" as an example rule and says the card stays hidden from the agent. Developers can build on the same pieces at shop.dev: Shopify Catalog, sign-in with Shop, cart, checkout and Shop Pay.
Stripe makes businesses payable by handle
On October 27, Stripe introduced Stripe Pay for instant transfers between businesses. A business finds another by its Stripe profile handle and sends money for free, from the Stripe Dashboard or the command line. The preview covers eligible US and UK businesses, for same-currency transfers in USD, GBP and USDC. The sender needs a funded Treasury account with Stripe. The recipient needs a Treasury account or a payout-enabled bank account linked to its Stripe profile.
Stripe also wrote rules for the AI agents that send this money. If the sender has no exact handle, Stripe's docs tell the agent to search Stripe Directory first. The agent should prefer results with a clear profile handle and show the user a short list. It must never guess the recipient. A business appears in Stripe Directory once it publishes a public Stripe profile.
The sale moves into the listing
Each launch moves a step of AI shopping, or of paying a business, off a brand's website and into a listing on Shopify or Stripe.
Your product data makes the sale inside ChatGPT and Claude
A shopper who uses shop.md can find, compare and pay for your product inside ChatGPT or Claude. The AI agent picks what to recommend from your product data in Shopify Catalog: the title, the attributes, the price and the stock. Does your product page still matter? Yes, for the shopper who clicks through. For the shopper who stays in the chat, your product data in Shopify Catalog is the whole pitch.

On shop.com, Shop ranks results by each signed-in shopper's own history. Through shop.md, the AI agent recommends from what the shopper recently bought. A brand that already sold to a shopper through Shop starts that shopper's next search with an edge. A brand meeting the shopper for the first time competes on its product data in Shopify Catalog. That's why a first order through Shop is worth more: it earns the brand a higher place in that shopper's next search.
Shopper rules decide which products an AI agent compares
A budget cap or a rule such as "fast shipping only" narrows the field before the AI agent compares anything. The products that stay in are the ones whose price, delivery speed and stock fit the rule. Shoppers used to weigh price and shipping speed at checkout. With shop.md, those two details decide whether a product reaches the comparison at all.
A clear Stripe profile gets a business paid
Stripe tells the AI agent to prefer a business it can identify clearly, and to show the user a short list otherwise. For a brand that sells wholesale or invoices other businesses, a buyer's AI agent paying through Stripe Pay reads that brand's public Stripe profile first. A recognizable name, a handle such as @yourbrand and a short line about what the brand sells turn the short list into one obvious match.
